Paramedic Killed and Ambulance Destroyed by Israeli Shelling
As reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Oxfam and the Union of Health Work Committees - Gaza (UHWC), on 10:00am on Sunday 4th January one of only two ambulances run by the UHWC out of Al Awda Hospital in Northern Gaza was hit by an Israeli shell.
The ambulance was shelled while the paramedics were just outside the ambulance attending to an injured person from a previous bombing. One of the paramedics, 33-year-old Arafa Abd Al-Dayim of Beit Hanoun died around 1.45pm during surgery, as he suffered a direct injury to his chest, abdomen (specifically his liver was severely damaged) and right hand. Arafa leaves behind a wife and 6 children.
The UHWC ambulance was completely destroyed. The Australian Muslim community have committed to raising the funds with partners Oxfam Solidarity Belgium, to enable UHWC to convert a van into an ambulance to be able to access and treat the sick and injured in Gaza. This is a critical need for the people of Gaza and we ask the whole Australian community to donate urgently.
[Update: Since this, the UHWC's only other ambulance was shelled rendering it inoperable. As of now, UHWC have no active ambulance service.]

Assalamu Alaikum
Please see the following message and contact Imtiaz Mohamed (e-mail: mim_786@yahoo.com.au) if you are interested.

Parveen Muhammed Secretary, USMAA - www.usmaa.org.au
Asslamu Allaikum All,
The Committee for Sri Lanka (CFSL) in collaboration with the VMC and Deakin University has undertaken a research to get a better understanding of community awareness of Vic Govt facilities, what additional facilities and further enhancements required to the existing facilities. Further background information and objectives are enlisted below for your information.
CFSL is seeking assistance from the Sri Lankan community and will be handing over a $30.00 gift voucher for each participant as a token of appreciation.
The first session will be held on Sunday 5 Oct, in Boxhill Library Room 1 at 3pm.
Those who are interested please forward your name, e-mail, tel/mobile number to Imtiaz Mohamed (e-mail: mim_786@yahoo.com.au) ASAP to inform CFSL make necessary arrangements Thank you.
Background: Vic Govt through various departments offers a multitude of services to the community and the information of these services are made available through various communications channels. The strategies developed by Vic Govt to strengthen social welfare include assistance to older Victorians stay independent, providing fairer access to services, creating better opportunities for communities to work with the government, and the building capacity of individuals, families and communities to create new opportunities by and themselves.
The Sri Lankan community is one of the major culturally and linguistically different (CALD) communities within the Victorian community. It is estimated that there are over 50,000 Victorians of Sri Lankan origin including the second generation Victorian Sri Lankan and those who migrated to Victoria having born in another country. The Sri Lankan therefore constitute a sizeable community in Victoria which has made a significant contribution to economic, social, and cultural fabrics of Victorian society over the years and has a considerable voice for further development.
Despite a relatively established community group, its composition is highly divers. It has a number of vulnerable groups including Seniors Victorians the youth, the migrants, and economically and socially underprivileged families who depend on Victorian Government services for better social and economic life. Hence there is a need for a greater understanding of community in terms of its profile which would assist the government services to be better targeted.
Objectives of the Research: The Committee for Sri Lanka (CFSL) in collaboration with the VMC and Deakin University has undertaken a research to:
- Determine the degree of awareness, dissemination and understanding of key services offered; - Assess the perception of SL community on the availability and delivery of these services - Determine strategies to change individual and group behaviours and to engage the vulnerable community groups to enhance opportunities to benefit from Voc govt social policy initiatives - Determines what other additional facilities and further enhancement to the existing facilities to be factored to improve the social fabric and the living standards of the community.
Action required by the SL Muslim Community: CFSL is looking for a couple people to represent from the SL Muslim Community for each of the following 3 focus groups. Each group will take part in a one-off brainstorming session at different dates. Young and Mid-Aged Family Grp sessions will be held on Sunday, 5 Oct in Boxhill Library Room 1 at 3pm, which will be followed by a workshop in mid-November.
Focus Groups: Young Family Grp: 25 – 45 yrs – on Sunday 5 Oct, Boxhill Library Room 1 at 3pm Mid Aged Family Grp: 46 – 65 yrs - on Sunday 5 Oct, Boxhill Library Room 1 at 3pm Senior Grp: over 65 yrs
A $30.00 gift voucher will be given to each participant as a token of appreciation .
Those who are interested please forward your name, e-mail, tel/mobile number to Imtiaz Mohamed (e-mail: mim_786@yahoo.com.au) ASAP to inform CFSL make necessary arrangements Thank you.
